Everything you own should have a “resting space”

An organized space’s number one enemy is clutter. Clutter can look like many different things but usually shows up in the form of random items scattered among flat surfaces. One of the best ways to mitigate clutter is by creating a designated space for everything you own. For example, rather than leaving tv remotes out on the table opt for a basket or bin that will serve as the remotes’ “home”. Think about your kitchen: if you couldn’t find your spoons because they were scattered throughout your drawers, wouldn’t that drive you crazy? The same tactic is at play here. If you always know where your belongings should go, you won’t misplace things and will cause less clutter in the space overall. 

Follow the shopping bag rule 

One rule used by organizers everywhere is the “shopping bag rule”. This rule consists of keeping one shopping bag or tote bag around for sorting items that you don’t want or don’t need. By the end of the week, you will have a whole bag of items you can donate! You can also keep a trash bag separate from your “donate” bag which you can use a trash bag for while you cleaning up. 

Cycle kid’s and pets’ toys 

If you have kids or pets, cycle their toys so that they’re not all scattered around the house at once. By keeping 50-75% of your children’s and pet’s toys away you can control how many items are in your space at a time. This also lets your little ones be excited about their toys and not tire of the ones they have as quickly!
